WELTEC BIOPOWER begins construction of 60GW Spanish biomethane plant
In Spain, together with the environmental service provider PreZero and Enagás Renovable, WELTEC BIOPOWER began construction of a biomethane plant north of Madrid in August 2026. After commissioning, the plant in Colmenar Viejo will generate up to 60 gigawatt hours of green energy annually. This corresponds to the energy requirements of around 11,700 households or 30,000 inhabitants.
All urban and environmental permits required for construction are available for the project. In addition to the planning permit and the building permit granted by the municipality of Colmenar Viejo, the plant has also received the integrated environmental permit of the Madrid Autonomous Community. This confirms that the project meets the comprehensive technical and environmental requirements for plants of this type.
The plant is being developed by PreZero and Enagás Renovable. PreZero belongs to the Schwarz Group, which also includes Lidl and Kaufland, and has extensive experience in waste management and the biomethane sector. The company operates throughout Europe and exploits the waste of more than twelve million people in Spain and Portugal. As the Spanish market leader, PreZero generated more than 53 percent of the biomethane produced nationwide in 2025. Enagás Renovable is a leading independent energy producer in Spain and specializes in the development of renewable gases and decarbonization solutions. Currently, the company is pushing ahead with a portfolio of more than 20 projects nationwide, making it one of the key players in the energy transition.
