Next Hydrogen gets Canada government funding for electrolzer R&D
In Bulgaria, Renewables Now reported that Canadian electrolyzer maker Next Hydrogen Solutions said it has secured up to 1.44 million in non-repayable funding from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) to develop scalable manufacturing processes for commercial electrolyzer modules.
Provided through NRCan’s Energy Innovation Program, the funding will enable Next Hydrogen to support research and development (R&D) effort aimed at improving the efficiency, performance and manufacturing cost of its alkaline electrolyzers.
The company is targeting a performance of 1.8 volts per cell at 1.0 ampere per square centimeter by the first quarter of 2027, followed by a target of 1.7 volts per cell at 1.2 amperes per square centimeter by September 2028, according to the report.
Next Hydrogen expects the improvements to reduce electricity consumption per kilogram of hydrogen produced by about 8% and lower electrolyzer fabrication costs. Electricity accounts for 60%-70% of hydrogen production operating costs, it said.
