CFE, HDF Energy advance Mexico’s first solar-hydrogen hybrid plant
In Chile, BNamericas reported that Mexico’s state utility CFE said it is advancing the country’s first power plant to combine solar generation, battery storage and green hydrogen, aimed at strengthening supply on the isolated electricity grid of Baja California Sur.
The Oasis project is the only green hydrogen project included in CFE’s 2026-2030 expansion plan, and is being developed with French company HDF Energy (Hydrogène de France) under CFE’s mixed scheme, according to the report.
The initiative will have 60 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity and 20MW of energy storage.
Electricity from the solar panels will power electrolyzers, producing the hydrogen contained in water. That hydrogen will then be stored and later run through fuel cells, which generate electricity that is injected into the grid, the report added.
Located in Sinaloa, the facility will produce green hydrogen on-site through a planned 210MW electrolyzer using Siemens Energy technology, with Siemens Energy and Techint as EPC contractor members.
