LanzaTech shifts from licensing to owning waste carbon fuel projects
In the United States, LanzaTech CEO Jennifer Holmgren said the carbon recycling company is moving beyond technology licensing to own and operate projects that convert industrial waste gases into ethanol for aviation, marine fuels and chemicals, backed by more than $500 million from infrastructure investor Brookfield. The Skokie, Illinois company uses gas fermentation to turn carbon rich industrial emissions into ethanol that can serve as a fuel or chemical feedstock.
Holmgren outlined the strategy September 16 on Water Tower Research’s Small Cap Spotlight podcast, saying recent European certification could open higher value markets in the European Union and United Kingdom.
Over the next 12 to 18 months, LanzaTech expects to transfer its first project to Brookfield, reach investment and construction milestones for projects in the United Kingdom and Belgium, and see its recycled carbon ethanol used in marine fuel for the first time.
