Converted ammonia carrier cleared for ship to ship bunkering
In China, Xinde Maritime News reports Jiangsu Andefu Energy Development has converted the Shenghang Yongle into what the company describes as the world’s first operating vessel classed for ship to ship liquid ammonia bunkering, with China Classification Society issuing its first ammonia bunkering class certificate. The vessel has not yet carried out a commercial ammonia fuel transfer; commissioning, drills and bunkering trials are still to come.
The 4,626 deadweight ton ammonia and LPG carrier already had low temperature tanks and cargo systems suited to ammonia. Its conversion added the systems, procedures and safety controls required to fuel another ship.
Belgian shipping group CMB.TECH owns a minority stake in Andefu and has agreed to buy renewable ammonia from CEEC’s Songyuan project in China for its growing ammonia powered fleet.
