DNV says LNG bunker fleet must more than double by 2030
In Norway, DNV’s new Gas Bunker Vessels white paper says the global LNG bunker fleet will need to grow from about 70 vessels today reaching between 165 and 208 by 2030 to keep pace with rising marine fuel demand. About 900 LNG fueled ships are already operating worldwide, excluding LNG carriers, and another 650 are on order.
DNV says the existing bunker fleet and current order book should cover demand through 2027, but additional vessels will be needed from 2028. Ports will also require more storage, berths and transfer infrastructure to avoid shifting the bottleneck ashore.
The report says the same LNG bunkering network can also handle bioLNG, or liquefied biomethane, and synthetic methane, broadening the use of today’s infrastructure beyond fossil LNG.
