Formosa Plastics’ new smart algae oil earns EU sustainability certification
In Taiwan, BigGo Finance reported that Formosa Plastics New Smart, a subsidiary of the Formosa Plastics Group, announced that its affiliate Chenghao Technology has officially obtained ISCC EU international sustainability and carbon certification for its algae oil technology development, establishing a critical foundation for algae oil to enter the international sustainable fuel supply chain and marking a breakthrough in the key verification mechanism for renewable fuel feedstock to enter the European sustainable aviation fuel supply chain.
With the Taiwanese government setting a policy target of 5% SAF usage for Taiwanese airlines by 2030, Formosa Plastics New Smart is developing Taiwanese-made emerging feedstock through microalgae, aiming to enhance the stability and self-reliance of aviation green energy, according to the report.
The report highlighted that the certification scope covers microalgae cultivation and algae oil production, and also includes greenhouse gas emissions calculation and related management mechanism verification, extending algae oil development from the technical level to compliance with international sustainability standards.
The company will subsequently advance process scale-up, production efficiency improvement, and cost optimization, moving from pilot production to mid-scale and commercial-scale validation.
