NEDO, Kyoto University build world’s first hydrogen beamline at SPring-8-II

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization, or NEDO, and Kyoto University will build a dedicated beamline for hydrogen energy research at the next-generation SPring-8-II synchrotron facility.

The beamline, formally named the Hydrogen Energy Material Multimodal Measurement Beamline and designated BL34XU, will be the first newly built dedicated beamline at SPring-8-II. NEDO described BL34XU as the world’s first dedicated beamline specializing in the hydrogen energy field. The project is part of NEDO’s research and development program to strengthen common infrastructure for expanding hydrogen use, according to the report.

The beamline is designed to study fuel-cell and water-electrolysis materials while they are operating, using multiple advanced measurement methods simultaneously on the same sample under the same conditions. That approach is intended to let researchers observe internal phenomena in devices such as fuel cells and electrolyzers without splitting tests across separate instruments, it added.
