Sunfire begins building megawatt-scale SOEC plant at BASF site
In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Sunfire has officially broken ground on a Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cell test facility at BASF’s Industrial Park Lausitz, a chemical and industrial hub in Schwarzheide, Brandenburg, Germany.
BASF InfraService & Solutions Lausitz said it plans to validate its newest and most powerful SOEC product generation under real industrial conditions, having increased the capacity per individual core unit to megawatt scale.
The plant will produce hydrogen through electrolysis, which normally splits water into hydrogen and oxygen using electricity. To cut electricity use and lower the traditionally cost-intensive process, the test system will use water vapor rather than liquid water, according to the report.
