Taebaek methanol project lines up shipping buyers before construction
In South Korea, Energy Daily reports EcoMethanol, Taebaek City, Hyundai Corporation, Wallenius Wilhelmsen Ocean and EUKOR Car Carriers signed an agreement on August 26 to develop a supply chain for clean methanol from a planned 15,000 ton per year plant in Taebaek.
EcoMethanol plans to invest 120 billion won in the plant at Dongjeom Industrial Complex, using forest residues as feedstock and dual fluidized bed gasification to produce methanol for marine fuel. Construction is scheduled to begin in December, with commercial production targeted for January 2029.
Under the proposed structure, Hyundai Corporation would purchase the methanol and supply it to the two global car carriers, while Taebaek City participates as a co-investor and provides administrative and policy support.
The project has completed basic design, site acquisition and integrated environmental permitting.
