Finland opens largest biogas plant to date with liquid biomethane capacity

August 19, 2026 |

In Finland, national news agency YLE reports the country’s largest biogas plant to date was opened in Nurmo, South Ostrobothnia on Tuesday and is the first to produce liquid biomethane. The first batch of biogas is expected to be completed in October. After that, heavy traffic can refuel biogas from several petrol stations around Finland. The nearest refueling point will be completed in Nurmo, and it will be opened this year. The process of the plant began in April, when the first manure loads were brought in. Since then, the reactors have been heated and gas production stabilised. The annual production target of the Nurmo biogas plant is 100 gigawatt-hours, which corresponds to about 10 million liters of diesel. From the beginning, the factory does not yet run one hundred percent.
