Italy expands use of HVO in rail logistics
The initiative involves the companies Mercitalia Rail and Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal and aims to reduce the carbon footprint of logistics activities, including in the wider decarbonization path of the FS Group.
As for Mercitalia Rail, tests are underway on two locomotives, one intended for traction and one for maneuvering activities, for an expected total consumption of about 15,000 liters of HVO. In Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal, on the other hand, biofuel is already used on maneuvering locomotives used at the sites of Santo Stefano Magra and Valdellora.
The experiment also involves road transport. The progressive renewal of the truck fleet led to the introduction of 21 Euro 6 vehicles powered by HVO. In 2025, a total of about 19,000 liters of biofuel were consumed, allowing up to about 40 tons of CO2 to be avoided compared to diesel use. The reduction is equivalent, according to FS Logistix, to the annual emissions of about 15-20 passenger cars.
