In Florida, Eastern Shipbuilding has begun construction on the first of three hybrid electric ferries for Washington State Ferries, restarting new vessel construction for the system after a decade’s lull. Each U.S. built ferry will carry 160 cars and 1,500 passengers, with deliveries scheduled for 2030, 2031 and 2032.
The contract also shifts the work across the country. Washington’s four most recent Olympic class ferries were built by Vigor in Washington, with the Suquamish joining the fleet in 2018. Eastern won the new program in Washington State Ferries’ first competitive ferry construction bid in more than 25 years and will build the vessels at its Florida Gulf Coast yards
