China Classification Society greenlights methanol only marine engine

August 12, 2026 |

In China, the China Classification Society’s Shanghai branch has granted type approval and China Stage II emissions certification to CSSC’s 711 Research Institute for the country’s first high pressure direct injection, methanol only medium speed marine engine designed for full operating scenarios. The certificates were issued recently in Shanghai.

The approvals verify the domestically developed engine for marine use across multiple operating applications and move it closer to commercial production and installation aboard ships. The 711 Institute is also developing ammonia fueled propulsion equipment and has worked with CCS on green engines, ship energy efficiency systems and carbon capture technology.

CCS Shanghai said the two organizations plan to deepen cooperation on alternative fuel propulsion, certification and shipboard deployment of new marine equipment.
