Anchorage invests in waste-to-energy plant
In Colorado, Public News Service reported that City officials in Anchorage are turning waste that would otherwise be buried in a landfill into energy.
Anchorage is building a large incinerator to burn trash and create steam that will be harnessed as electricity. Anchorage conducted a feasibility study on the waste-to-energy plant six years ago and decided that it was worth the $700 million investment, which exceeded original estimates by as much as $400 million, according to the report.
The facility is expected to generate 25 megawatts of electricity, enough to power about 20,000 homes. It could be ready as soon as 2032, the report added.
