Renfe to trial Repsol’s HVO on the Costa Verde tourist train.

In Spain, Renfe has signed a general protocol of action with Repsol to promote the use of renewable fuels HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) as an alternative to conventional diesel oil of fossil origin in those rail services whose infrastructure is not yet electrified.

As the first experience in travel services, Renfe and Repsol have carried out with satisfactory results a 100% renewable Nexa diesel utilization test on the Costa Verde tourist train.

Previously, Renfe shared with Repsol technical information of the locomotive and the engine used in the generators and prepared the railway material for the completion of the test. To do this, it completely emptied a 619 series locomotive from conventional fuel. Subsequently, Repsol supplied 1,000 liters of renewable fuel HVO free of charge at the Maintenance Base of El Berrón (Asturias), with which the full refueling of the locomotive was carried out.
