Indian Government launches domestic hydrogen train

In the UK, Railway Gazette International reported that Indian Railways’ prototype hydrogen fuel cell-powered multiple-unit entered revenue service on July 19, operating on the 89 km Jind – Gohana – Sonipat section of the Northern Railway.

Formed of two power cars equipped with a 1 200 kW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system and eight passenger cars, the trainset had been formally launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi two days earlier.

The hydrogen propulsion and fuel-cell systems have been supplied by Ballard Power Systems. BFG India has supplied various glass fiber reinforced plastic components, including the streamlined aerodynamic front ends and components for the train interiors, according to the report.
