ABS approves nuclear-powered 15,000-TEU containership concept
In South Korea, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) granted approval in principle to a 15,000-TEU containership concept powered by a small modular nuclear reactor, advancing a joint project with the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute.
KRISO designed the vessel, KAERI developed its marine molten salt reactor concept and ABS reviewed the overall design against applicable classification and safety requirements. Approval in principle indicates that no major technical barriers were identified at this stage, but it does not constitute approval for construction.
The multi-year project is examining the technical challenges of applying nuclear power to commercial shipping, including the interface between the reactor and vessel systems. KAERI plans to refine the reactor design for marine operating conditions and pursue testing and demonstration of key technologies, while KRISO will continue developing ship designs and marine engineering applications.
