ClassNK introduces shipbuilding carbon footprint notation
In Japan, ClassNK introduced the shipping industry’s first notation for verified shipbuilding carbon footprints on June 30, allowing shipyards and vessel owners to document greenhouse gas emissions generated during construction. The new “a-EA (CFP)” notation confirms that a vessel’s construction carbon footprint has been calculated and reviewed by ClassNK as an independent third party.
The classification society added the notation to the fourth edition of its environmental guidelines as companies face growing pressure to report emissions across their supply chains. For shipowners, vessel construction is generally counted under Scope 3 emissions for capital goods.
ClassNK said verified construction data could provide a more accurate measure than estimates based on standard emissions factors. It could also capture the use of lower-carbon materials and measures taken by shipyards to reduce emissions during construction.
