Chinese shipbuilder lands methanol-electric systems order for 10 bulk carriers
In China, CSSC’s 711 Institute and Wuhan Innovation Jianghai Transportation Co. signed an order in Shanghai for methanol generator sets and electric propulsion systems for 10 coastal bulk carriers on July 6. Each vessel will have a capacity of 23,600 deadweight tonnes. Ningbo Dongfang Ship Design Institute designed the vessels, which the companies said will be the first coastal ships of their size powered solely by methanol-fueled electric propulsion.
Each vessel will use a six-cylinder CS21M methanol generator rated at 1,130 kilowatts and a customized direct-current electric propulsion system developed by the 711 Institute. The institute said the engine uses direct methanol injection and can replace up to 90 percent of diesel consumption. The order expands an earlier partnership that supplied a methanol engine for China’s first 15,000-tonne river-to-sea vessel.
