Platts to increase GHG minimum savings in Ethanol T2 FOB Rotterdam barge
Platts will decrease the maximum carbon intensity to 23.5 g carbon dioxide equivalent, or CO2e, per megajoule, or MJ, equivalent to a minimum greenhouse gas saving of 75% based on a fossil fuel comparator of 94g CO2e/MJ under the European Commission’s Renewable Energy Directive RED II framework.
This decision follows a proposal note published July 17, 2025, which was based on feedback received during a consultation period that extended from Aug. 27, 2024 to June 30, 2025.
Platts will also make the averaging of GHG savings across Proof of Sustainability, or PoS, certificates standard until Dec. 31, 2028 to provide a timeline for transition to the minimum GHG increase. After this point, and dependent on market feedback, Platts may review PoS averaging to be extended further , provided it remains standard market practice following RED III implementation.
However, individual PoS certificates should not fall below 64.3% GHG savings, equivalent to a maximum CI of 33.52g CO2e, for a minimum 75% GHG saving ethanol parcel, unless mutually agreed otherwise.
At present, Platts T2 ethanol FOB Rotterdam barge assessments reflect product meeting a maximum CI of 33.52g of CO2e/MJ, or a minimum GHG saving of 64.3% based on a fossil fuel comparator of 94g CO2e/MJ under RED II.
