Japan and India set to sign a $3 billion green ammonia deal
In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Japan and India are set to sign an agreement financing a joint green hydrogen and ammonia production project by Japan’s IHI and India’s ACME Group.
The roughly $3 billion project will produce ammonia from solar-powered electrolysis in India and export it to Japan, where it will fuel coal power plants, serve as chemical feedstock, and clean semiconductors — with Japan’s government designating it for up to 15 years of subsidies to bridge the green-versus-conventional price gap, according to the report.
Ahead of the signing, Japan’s government will designate the project as eligible for support under its Hydrogen Society Promotion Act, in effect since 2024. That law guarantees subsidies for up to 15 years to close the price gap between renewable and conventional ammonia, the report added.
