Spain approves Mantle8 natural hydrogen exploration in Navarra and Basque country

July 2, 2026 |

In the UK, Fuel Cells Works reported that Mantle8 has secured two natural hydrogen exploration permits in Spain, covering 960km2 across Navarra and the Basque Country.

The permit area lies on the southern flank of the Pyrenees and features geology similar to the formations Mantle8 is evaluating through its Comminges permit on the French side of the mountain range, according to the report.

For the company, the Spanish permits are not being viewed as isolated prospects. Instead, Mantle8 sees the wider Pyrenees region emerging as a coherent natural hydrogen province, where geological continuity across borders could help reduce exploration risk before drilling begins, the report added.
