In Michigan, ZIVO Bioscience, Inc., a developer of nutritional compounds and bioactive molecules derived from its proprietary algal strains, entered into a tolling agreement and technical services contract with Synthetic Genomics, Inc. to produce algal biomass in sufficient quantity to meet validation sample demands in a variety of compliance studies and tests ranging from basic toxin screening through more sophisticated digestibility and protein quality tests.

The initial biomass cultivation will be carried out in small bioreactors and indoor ponds and is expected to move to larger outdoor ponds a short time later. To ensure sample quality, inflatable greenhouse canopies will be placed over the outdoor cultivation ponds to protect the algae from temperature extremes and windblown debris.

ZIVO will conduct food and feed safety testing to meet Generally Recognized as Safe requirements; while rigorous control of the algal biomass production will provide a framework for anticipated Good Manufacturing Practice certification.
