50 Hottest Companies in Bioenergy candidate profile: BioFuelBox
BioFuelBox
Based in: California
2008-09 ranking: Unranked
Business: BioFuelBox helps companies and municipalities by providing a low-cost and environmentally-friendly method to dispose of waste FOG (fats, oils, and greases). The patented NovoStream process for converting waste FOG yields 7 times more energy than what goes into producing it – twice the net energy ratio of soy-derived biodiesel.
Model: Owner-operator. The company co-locates with waste-stream partners, and shares revenues from its projects.
Past milestones:
1. Element Partners, a California-based VC that backs the company, raised a $486 million cleantech investment fund.
2. The company was profiled in BusinessWeek among “25 Companies to Watch in Energy Tech” as a “Little Green Dynamo”.
3. Last January, the company announced that it had developed a path to removing sulphur from waste greases to qualify its fuels under ASTM standards for on-road usage.
Future milestones:
1. The company will focus on securing partnerships with municipal wastewaster treatment plants, industrial food processors, and any organization that produces in excess of 1 million gallons of waste fats, oils and greases (FOG).
Metrics: With first installation, the company would save 10,000 metric tons per year in CO2e emissions, while taking material that is up to 100 percent free fatty acids, up to 30 percent water and high in contaminants such as sulfur, phosphorus and calcium.
BiofuelBox quotable quotes: “What makes us different from other biodiesel producers is that our waste-derived biodiesel has twice the net energy ratio of soy-derived biodiesel. Each of our small footprint biodiesel plants reduces almost 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year – the equivalent of planting half a million trees, or reducing driving by 18.5 million miles. Equally important to us, each plant diverts 10,000,000 lbs. of waste from landfills each year. Waste degradation results in methane that has 21 times the greenhouse potency of carbon dioxide. Pretty amazing results from such a small facility.”
“We’re not talking about french fry grease here – rather, this is the really horrible material that gets land filled. Through a partnership with the waste generator BioFuelBox provides a turnkey solution that converts this FOG waste into a premium biodiesel.”
The Hot 50 for 2009-10 will be released Tuesday, 12/1. Between now and then, you’ll see profiles of potential candidates in the Digest, and you’ll have a chance to vote for your favorites. Reader response will count for 50 percent of a company’s overall score in the preparation of the rankings. The remaining 50 percent is voted by a panel of experts.
