Senator Charles Grassley of Iowa: “I’m glad the administration made clear so quickly that the president supports maintaining the 54-cent-per-gallon tariff on imported ethanol. In light of the administration’s very clear response, I’ll lift my objection to proceeding to Mr [Thomas] Shannon’s nomination”.

POET completes corn cob harvesting trial; plans to expand to 25,000 acres in fall as cellulosic ethanol prep continues
In South Dakota, POET announced that it successfully completed its first corn cob collection season, and in a 16-day trial of new cob harvesting technology. The company said that it expects to harvest up to 25,000 acres for cobs in Texas, South Dakota and Iowa this fall.

CPC adds second city for Taiwan E3 ethanol sales
In Taiwan, CPC announced that it would commence sales of E3 ethanol in Kaohsiung City, and added that it would incentivize sales with a discount of NT$2 per gallon below the cost of gasoline.
Kaohsiung joins Taipei as the only two cities with E3 fuels available – eight stations in Taipei offer ethanol blended fuel.

30 Mgy California biodiesel plant opens
In California, the 30 Mgy Crimson Renewable Energy biodiesel plant in Kern County officially opened. State Sen. Dean Florez was on hand for ribbon-cutting. The company says it will use a combination of waste oils, animal fats and oilseed crops as feedstocks.
The opening increased California’s biodiesel capacity from 34 Mgy to 64 Mgy.
Green Plains starts up at newly-acquired 100 Mgy Nebraska ethanol plant
In Nebraska, Green Plains Renewable Energy announced that it has commenced operations at its recently-acquired 100 Mgy Central City ethanol plant. The company said that they made necessary repairs and capital improvements to the plant. The plant had been idle since November 2008.

Chinese researchers pioneer low-cost biodiesel catalyst from shrimp shells
In China, researchers will publish a report in the Aug 20 issue of The American Chemical Society’s Energy & Fuels of their success in developing a low-cost biodiesel catalyst from shrimp shells. The researchers say that their catalyst converted rapeseed oil to biodiesel faster than existing catalysts, and that the catalyst can be recycled.
Biofuels Digest Index advances 0.27 percent to 62.74 on Verenium, BP gains
The Biofuels Digest Index™ (BDI), a basket of public biofuels stocks, gained 0.27 percent to 62.74 as BP and Verenium led gainers. For the day, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) fell fell 1.66 percent to $30.22, while BP was up 0.40 percent to $49.87. Among small caps, Verenium (VRNM) rose 7.14 percent to $0.60. UK’s Technology Strategy Board launches $148 million research program to reduce airline emissions
In the UK, the Technology Strategy Board (TSB) announced that a coalition of universities and aviation companies will undertake a $148 million research program to reduce the carbon footprint of aviation and improve engine fuel efficiency. ArborGen says US Southeastern energy start-ups aims to use 26 million tons of forest biomass
In Florida, ArborGen, a joint venture formed by Rubicon (NZ), International Paper, and MeadWestvaco said that of 58 energy start ups announced in the Southeast through the end of 2008 would be utilizing 26 million tons of biomass, the equivalent of 26 new paper mills.
