Brazil’s ethanol production surges 40 percent over last year

In Brazil, UNICA said that ethanol production in the current harvest year has surged more than 40 percent compared to last year, to 1.22 billion gallons.

The Brazilian sugar growers’ trade association said that the increasing size of the Brazilian flex-fuel fleet, competitive prices for hydrous ethanol compared to gasoline and increasing ethanol demand in the north of the country had contributed to the surge in production. UNICA said that an accelerated harvest was reducing average sugar recovery per ton of cane by up to 2 percent.
