Lignol commences production of woodchip cellulosic ethanol in British Columbia
In Canada, Lignol Energy has commenced production of cellulosic ethanol from wood chips at its pilot plant in Burnaby, British Columbia. The plant completed construction in April and has been in start-up process since then. The company said that information gained from operation of the pilot plant will be used to “understand and mitigate” problems that would cause risk in the scale-up process, and would accelerate the company’s path towards commercialization.
Last March, Lignol Energy received an additional $1.4 million in support from the Canadian government for the demonstration-scale plant in British Columbia.
Lignol, which has invested $15.5 million in the project, said that it expects to construct a 53 Mgy commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol plant that would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 740,000 tonnes per year.
