House Speaker meets with Agriculture Committee chairman Peterson on biofuels, climate change bills
In Washington, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with House Agriculture chairman Collin Peterson, who has said that he opposes the climate change bill because is seeking to make action on biofuels a higher priority for the House’s consideration.
Peterson and 46 other members of the House have co-sponsored a bill which would increase the amount and type of land that would be eligible in the production of advanced biofuels that would qualify for the Renewable Fuel Standard, and also restate a provision in the 2007 EISA Act so that indirect land use change takes into account only changes in US lands, rather than looking at the potential for indirect land use impact in other countries.
Speaker Pelosi said that she was optimistic that there would be material action on the climate bill this summer, although the House Agriculture Committee is one of eight committees through which the bill passes before it reaches the floor of the House.
