Upfront Chromatography launches new process for upgrading biomass proteins to food-grade proteins; algae biofuel ventures may benefit from higher returns

In Denmark, protein-separation specialist Upfront Chromatography announced the launch of Rhobust EBA, a protein isolation platform that enables mining for food grade proteins from biofuels. The new process enables the upgrade of proteins in biomass to food-grades of even higher value than the existing protein base, which typically is used for animal feed or other lower-value uses such as co-firing for power generation.

The Rhobust technology enables a more cost-effective and efficient separation of soluble proteins from lipids, carbohydrates, minerals, colours, off-flavours and toxins. The new technology will be of special interest to the emerging algae biofuels industry that is investigating the potential value of the biomass fraction of algae.
