Oregon group to convert dairy, wood waste to butanol

In Oregon, Diesel Brewing of Salem announced that it will construct a pilot gasification plant that will convert dairy and wood waste into butanol. The company said that it expects to open the pilot facility by the end of the year and produce as much as 30,000 gallons per year in the pilot phase of the project from 180-360 tons of waste. The company said that, at commercial scale, their technology could utilize up to 100 tons of wood and dairy waste per day. Butanol has an energy density that is only five percent lower than gasoline, and requires no change in infrastructure to transport the fuel, or engine modifications to run it.
