Biochar improves crop yields by 6-17 percent: test results

In Canada, Dynamotive Energy Systems and BlueLeaf said that a year-long test showed an overall increase of 6% to 17% in crop yields where biochar was applied compared to control plots, and illustrated the potential of biochar not only to store carbon but to improve crop yields, plus soil and water quality. In the test, 3500 pounds per acre of biochar was applied last May to test plot in Quebec.

Tests showed a 68 percent increase in root length, 22 percent lower plant leaf temperatures, and 44 percent reduction in soil nutrient depletion rate. Biochar is a byproduct of fast pyrolysis used by Dynamotive and other companies, such as Sustainable Power.
