46 new US Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) that will be established at universities, national labs, NGOs and private firms announced; biofuels research on the agenda
Speaking at the National Academy of Science, President Obama announced that the DOE Office of Science will invest $777 million through 2014 for 46 new Energy Frontier Research Centers (EFRCs) that will be established at universities, national labs, NGOs and private firms.
Twenty EFRCs will focus on solar energy, biofuels, advanced nuclear energy, and geological CO2 sequestration. Six will pursue energy efficiency technologies, six on energy storage, and 14 on catalysis and materials that perform in extreme environments. The EFRCs will be located in 36 states, plus the District of Columbia.
31 are located at universities, 12 at DOE National Laboratories, two at nonprofit organizations, including the Danforth Center in Missouri, and one by a corporate research laboratory.
