EPA proposes landmark ruling to enable regulation of greenhouse gases under Clean Air Act
In Washington, in a landmark ruling, the EPA issued a proposed finding that “greenhouse gases contribute to air pollution that may endanger public health or welfare,” and proposed to regulate the emission of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride.
The EPA now moves into a six-week public comment period. The EPA reviewed its greenhouse gas policy following a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way for a revision. Following the public comment period, the EPA may have the ability to regulate greenhouse gas emissions under the Clean Air Act, after a proposed process was developed and subjected to stakeholder input.
EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson restated her preference for a legislative solution rather than a regulatory approach to controlling greenhouse gas emissions.
