In Brazil, the largest four auto makers in the country ranked by sales – GM, Ford, Fiat and Volkswagen – have banded together with the sugar grower’s trade association UNICA to distribute two million free booklets touting the benefits of sugarcane-based ethanol. The goal of the campaign, said UNICA, is to change consumer ideas about ethanol, saying that at present the decision by flex-fuel vehicle owners to buy ethanol or gasoline is based primarily on price. The booklet explains the tailpipe emission benefits of using ethanol, and also says that vehicle owners do not have to alternate between buying gasoline and ethanol to help with vehicle performance.
