UK Transport Department opens 10-week consultation on aviation emissions scheme; biofuels in focus

In the UK, the Department for Transport and Department of Energy and Climate Change has launched a 10-week “consultation” aimed at gathering response to the proposed regulations for aviation emissions under the Emissions Trading Scheme. The airlines, naturally, would like to opt out or limit the regulatory impact.

Advanced biofuels producers, by contrast, couldn’t be happier with the prospect of airlines having to sharply curtail CO2 emissions, which will come in the short term primarily through the deployment of liquid biofuels. The 780 aircraft operators have until August 31st to submit a plan for how they will benchmark existing emissions. Given that airlines will have to reduce from that benchmark, they’re likely to want to do everything short of placing a coal-fired power plant inside the cabin of their widebodies.
