EPA reports dismal US greenhouse gas numbers: Up 1.7 percent in ‘07 despite voluntary, mandated efforts

The EPA reported that, despite vigorous voluntary and mandated efforts to control emissions, greenhouse gas production increased in the US by 1,4 percent in 2007 to 7.125 million metric tons, up from 7.029 million in 2006. The EPA cited weather, reduced hydroelectric power production and increased use of fossil fuels to generate electric power for the increase. US emissions are now 17.1 percent higher than in 1990. The Kytoto Treaty, which the US did not ratify, would have required a 7 percent reduction in emissions by 2012 from 1990 levels.
