Impact of Biofuel Industry Expansion on Grain Utilization and Distribution: Preliminary Results of Iowa Grain and Biofuel Survey reports grower-to-processor direct trading sharply up
In Iowa, researchers from Iowa State University and the University of Tennessee are reporting that direct-to-processor corn sales, bypassing the grain elevator middleman, has sharply increased.
Their study, “Impact of Biofuel Industry Expansion on Grain Utilization and Distribution: Preliminary Results of Iowa Grain and Biofuel Survey,” reports that 27 percent of corn is now sold directly to processors, up from 13 percent in 1999. The report also found that 92 percent of corn purchased by Iowa ethanol and other corn processing plants comes from in-state, and is exclusively truck-delivered.
