In Saudi Arabia, a leading Islamic scholar warned that the use of biofuels by Muslims could violate the religion’s prohibitions against alcohol. Sheikh Mohamed Al-Najimi said that the Prophet Muhammed prohibited “buying, selling, carrying, serving, drinking, and manufacturing” alcohol. Majimi took pains to make clear that his analysis should not be considered a formal prohibition, or fatwa, and that the status of ethanol needed further study.
