Pro-Natura green charcoal, from biomass pyrolysis, reduces CO2; Air France offers green char carbon offsets based on Senegal project

In France, Air France is now giving passengers the option to buy carbon offset credits tied to the Pro-Natura green charcoal project in Senegal. The pyrolysis technology produces 11.6 tons of CO2-equivalent reduction of greenhouse gases per ton of green charcoal produced by Pro-Natura’s pyro-7 technology. The  United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) has not yet approved the methodology for Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) carbon credits.

The Digest has previously reported on startling carbon-sequestration numbers resulting from biochar, which is a product of pyrolysis applied to biomass feedstocks.
