In Thailand, the Eastern Sugar Group has commenced production at its 55 Mgy molasses-based ethanol plant in Sakeaw province. The plant is also engineered to use wheat, corn, and sugar beets as ethanol feedstocks. The plant opening comes as the industry has now built up to 241 million gallons of annual ethanol production capacity, while national demand is around 96 Mgy. There are 15 ethanol plants now online. Eastern Sugar announced that, while ethanol production was underway, they had shelved plans to increase power production from MW to 20MW.
