In Australia, algae research pioneer John Benemann has been appointed as specialist advisor to the Australian-based Future Fuels Consortium. The consortium consists of the national science agency CSIRO, the South Australian Research and Development Institute, Flinders University, and SANCON. Benemann said that the challenge for Australian-based algae biofuels was to develop low-cost technologies for the stable cultivation and harvesting of algae. He said that a focus on high-value nutraceuticals and water remediation projects would offset development costs in the near-term.
