X PRIZE starts high-production division for auto efficiency prize after major car makers balk

In Michigan, the X Prize organization announced a new division in their prize competition for super fuel-efficient vehicles. The new division will focus on cars designed for high production volumes, The X Prize groups said “the new Division was created to address the fact that actual, high-volume production vehicles involve more and substantially harder engineering challenges and tradeoffs than developmental vehicles that are production-capable.”

The group said that, with the announcement, they hoped that automakers would “take another look at our mission and see just how closely it aligns with their goals of bringing new, affordable and fuel-efficient technology to drivers everywhere.”
