Today in Biofuels Opinion: “Ethanol has become a lost issue as a fuel, a lost issue as a process and people don’t like the end product.”

Eric Apfelbach, outgoing CEO of Virent Energy Systems: “Ethanol has become a lost issue as a fuel, a lost issue as a process and people don’t like the end product. Corn ethanol is a political solution, and our [Virent] system is much more efficient. If you’ve got green gas that’s 10 cents more a gallon, people will buy straight gas every time, except for those people who we refer to as the rich green guys.”

Wally Tyner, Purdue University agricultural economist: “Only about 7 million of our nation’s 300-plus million cars are E85 flex-fuel vehicles. Also, we have just 1,700 fuel pumps in the entire country that can dispense E85, and most of those are in the Midwest. All of the E85 that’s marketed nationwide could be produced by one ethanol plant.”
