Energy Information Administration projects US ethanol production will fall 17 percent short of 2022 mandate

In Washington, the acting head of the Energy Information Administration projected that United States ethanol production will reach 30 billion gallons by 2022, 17 percent short of the mandated amount of ethanol to be blended into the nation’s fuel supply under the Renewable Fuel Standard. Howard Gruenspecht told Reuters that “near term growth of cellulosic … is certainly a question mark.” The administrator did not indicate whether the shortfall would be filled by imports from Brazil or other ethanol-producing countries, or addressed by waiving the mandates, a right reserved to the EPA Administrator under the Energy Independence and Security Act.
