General Atomics leads winning team in $19.9 million project to create affordable algae jet fuel
In Washington, a team led by General Atomics has won a $19.9 million contract to develop an affordable jet fuel from algae. The intended fuel will be a substitute for JP-8, consisting primarily of kerosene.
A total of 17 bids for the project were received by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration (DARPA) which has previously funded projects from stealth weaponry to the development of the internet. The project is expected to continue until June 2010. The winning team consists of General Atomics, Scripps Institutions of Oceanography, Arizona State University, Blue Sun Biodiesel, Texas A&M AgriLIFE, UOP, Hawaii Bio Energy, the University of North Dakota’s Energy and Environmental Research Center and Utah State University.
