In Canada, the city of Edmonton has announced a plant to convert 30 percent of their solid waste stream to ethanol. The city is partnering with Greenfield Ethanol and Enerkem, with funding being provided by the city and the Alberta Energy Research Institute, with the city contributing $50 million and the AERI adding $70 million. The city expects to produce 7.5 Mgy of ethanol using the Enerkem process and expects to pay back the investment within ten years. The Enerkem process converts dried solid waste into syngas, which is converted into ethanol in a catalytic reactor.
