In Florida, a deal between the Florida state government and US Sugar, over 181,000 acres of sugarcane land that would clear the way for the construction of Coskata’s 100 Mgy cellulosic ethanol plant, is once again in jeopardy.
The on-again, off-again deal has come under fire from the Florida Farm Bureau and some environmental groups over the patchwork quilt of lands that will be transferred to the state, and has been criticized by US Sugar rival Florida Crystals as a disguised bailout for its competitor. A deal to acquire the land for Everglades restoration was announced earlier this year by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist.
Coskata’s proposed plant would be the first cellulosic ethanol plant of its size in the world, and would use sugarcane residues as feedstock.
