Mobile phone giant Ericsson says solar, wind, and biofuels will power new growth in mobile expansion
In Sweden, mobile phone giant Ericsson said that alternative energy in the form of biofuels, solar and wind will power a new generation of mobile phone towers that will increase mobile phone subscriptions from 3.7 billion today to more than 6.5 billion by 2013. The company said that most of the growth will come in developing countries, where grid access for power to run mobile towers is prohibitively expensive and unreliable. Most towers in these developing areas rely on diesel fuel for their power,m which accounts for up to 50 percent of the operating cost for networks in certain regions, according to the company, with 2600 gallons of fuel required per radio site per year. The company introduced biodiesel as a substitute commencing in 2007, and is touting its use of submarine batteries as a means of reducing fuel consumption.
