Malaysia to impose B5 palm oil biodiesel mandate in 2010

In Malaysia, Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Peter Chin Fah Kui said that the country will impose a B5 palm oil biodiesel mandate effective in February 2010. The mandate is unusual in specifying not only a fuel blend ratio but a specific feedstock. The minister projected that the country would use 500,000 tonnes of palm oil biodiesel to fulfill the mandate, and would be subsidized by the government and available at a small discount to conventional diesel.  The government has issued a total of 91 biodiesel production licenses with a total capacity of 10.2 million tonnes. Currently the country has 1.5 million tonnes in production capacity.
